Former Supreme Court Justice Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani died in Karachi. He was 75 years old and had been suffering from cancer for a long time.
The funeral of the late will be held on Tuesday after the Asr prayer at the Hamza Mosque of Defense Phase 8.
Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani was counted among the dignified and principled judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. He started serving as a Sindh High Court Judge in 1998 and in 2009, the Chief Justice Sindh High Court.
Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani was among the judges who did not take oath under the PCO, which is also considered a symbol of constitutional resistance in the judiciary.
During the PPP government in 2008, he took oath again and was appointed a Supreme Court judge on the recommendations of Justice Abdul Hamid Dogar.
Justice Usmani was also part of a 14 -member bench of the Supreme Court that declared the November 3 emergency illegal. In the light of this decision, the appointments of the judges were banned during Justice Dogar’s time.
His death has expressed regret over the judicial circles, lawyers community, and various political and social leaders and expressed heartfelt condolences to his family.
